This week in ELA we are completing our current units. In reading we will be looking at longer fiction books as well as beginning chapter books. Our goal this week is focused on comprehension in which we want students to stop and retell what is happening in the their texts and then connect that to other parts of the book. In class we will be using the term "click together". We will also be focusing on the author's intentions and looking for the theme or message within a story. In writing we are focusing on author's craft and revising our stories with the intentions of using various craft moves. A craft move is something a writer does in their story to make it stronger. Examples include vivid descriptions, dialogue, figurative language, sensory details, and bold/italicized words. In class we will be looking at mentor texts and searching for craft moves the author used. We will then determine why they did that specific move and try it out in our own writing. In grammar we are working on verbs and nouns. We will specifically focus on plural and singular nouns as well as the tense of verbs. In phonics we are learning about "bossy r" are focusing on R controlled patterns. M/S/SS This week in math the students are using their knowledge of number lines and place value to learn addition strategies. This week they will focus on using base ten blocks to add two digit numbers. They will also introduce regrouping through this process. In science the students are learning about matter. They will be introduced to the 3 types of matter and focus on specific terms that relate to the topic. Please encourage them to explain the concept using the terms characteristic, property, mass, length, size, color, shape, and texture. In social studies the students are focusing on community and learning about American Symbols. HOMEWORK Homework is due on Friday for a grade. (Teachers do daily checks in which students can earn Dojo Points for completing the previous night's homework. ) Students are expected to read aloud 20 minutes every night, complete the short ELA task on the homework, and complete 20 minutes of Dreambox lessons.
