October 28, 2019ELA
This week we are working to complete our nonfiction units in both reading and writing. This week in reading we are focusing on analyzing texts on the same topic to compare the differences and similarities. We are also introducing main idea and details this week. There will be a major grade over the skills we have taught in this unit next week. In writing we are reviewing the writing process and creating our last informational book for a major grade. Below you will find the rubric we will be using to assess the students' pieces. (This was also posted on SeeSaw.) We have spent a large amount of our time on revising, so please remind your child the importance of going back into their drafts and adding more to their piece! In grammar we are reviewing nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, as well as subject/predicate through picture talks. In phonics we are beginning a new unit which focuses on tackling multi-syllabic words. This week we will focus on decoding words by parts and double constant words. M/S/SS This week in math the students are beginning a new unit. This unit will focus on adding up to four two-digit numbers and subtract two-digit numbers using mental strategies and algorithms based on knowledge of place value and properties of operations. This unit will also focus on solving one-step and multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction within 1,000 using a variety of strategies based on place value, including algorithms. This week they will focus on adding numbers up to 999 using number discs to develop the skill using the content they learned about place value. This week in science the students are continuing to learn about light and heat energy. They will visit the science lab and conduct an experiment using crayons. This week in social studies the students are reviewing land forms and then creating their own 3D model of a land form using materials in the classroom. They will then write about their land form and review before the test on Friday.
