Weekly Update
January 7, 2020Happy New Year! We are looking forward to continuing to work with your kiddos and help them grow this year! As we move forward, please note that assessments and graded assignments will no longer be read aloud to students. Students will be expected to read passages, questions, and answer choices to themselves unless otherwise noted in specific accommodations. If you have any questions about this, please contact your homeroom teacher.
ELA This week in ELA we are reviewing expectations and beginning our new units. In writing we are reviewing the writing process and focusing on increasing the students' writing stamina. This week we will introduce prompt writing and teach the students how to respond to a specific writing prompt. In reading we are also reviewing expectations and building or stamina. At this point in the year students should be reading on a level K and moving towards a level L. This week our lessons will focus on fluency and we will be assessing the students' abilities to read fluently, scooping up words in phrases, paying attention to punctuation, and using intonation and expressing to match their characters voices from various pieces of text. In grammar we are focusing on picture talks and reviewing nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. In phonics we are working on learning how to spell multi syllable words by using words or parts we already know. M/S/SS This week in math, science, and social studies the students are beginning new units. In math this week the unit will be over telling time. The students will learn how to read and write time to the nearest one-minute increment using analog and digital clocks and distinguish between a.m. and p.m. In science the students are learning about water and will focus on learning a bout fresh and salt water as well as lakes and rivers. In social studies the students are reviewing expectations and focusing on identifying characteristics of good citizenship, including truthfulness, justice, equality, respect for oneself and others, responsibility in daily life, and participation in government by educating oneself about the issues, respectfully holding public officials to their word, and voting. Homework Due to errors with the copier, ELA will not have homework this week. The students are still expected to complete 20 minutes of Dreambox lessons. Homework is due on Friday for a grade.

This week we are completing our units and preparing for winter break. In reading we will be taking our unit test that will cover character analysis, plot, and inference skills. In writing the students are completing the final touches on their published piece. In grammar and phonics we are reviewing past content. M/S/SS This week in math they are continuing with their measurement unit. This week they will focus on using concrete models of square units to find the areas of rectangles by covering them with no gaps or overlaps, counting to find the total number of square units, and then describing the measurement using a number and the unit. In science the students will be completing a stem activity that ties to their classroom content. In social studies the students are continuing to learn about the government, but also learning about holidays around the world. HOMEWORK Students are expected complete 20 minutes of Dreambox lessons each night for the month of December. (ELA homework will return in January, but we encourage all families to spend some time together reading your favorite books.) Homework is due on Friday for a grade. This week we are completing our current units. In reading the students will continue to work to analyze their characters. This week we will focus on digging in deeper to Charlotte's Web and understanding the importance of plot and connections between chapters. We will also focus on studying the characters and learning more about character traits based off of their actions, thoughts, and conversations. In writing we are working to complete our small moment unit. This week they will plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish a piece for a major grade. In grammar we are reviewing for our unit 4 test. A study guide will go home and it will cover nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and editing skills. In phonics we are continuing our work with word endings. There will be a graded activity later in the week that reflects the content taught from the past 4 weeks. (adding -es, -ed, -ing to various word patterns.) M/S/SS This week the students are deepening their understanding of their current units. This week in math the students are continuing their work with measurement. The students will be learning about standard and nonstandard measurement and will learn about the metric system as well as customary measurements. They will also be walking a mile so they students can develop a better understanding of distance. In science the students are continuing their work with rocks. In social studies the students are learning more about our government and focusing on the different roles and responsibilities. HOMEWORK Students are expected complete 20 minutes of Dreambox lessons each night for the month of December. (ELA homework will return in January, but we encourage all families to spend some time together reading your favorite books.) Homework is due on Friday for a grade. This week in reading we are reviewing the content we introduced before Thanksgiving break. We will focus on character traits and making inferences about our characters using their actions, thoughts, and words. In writing we are also reviewing meaningful small moments. This week the students will begin a new small moment story and complete it by Friday for a minor grade. This grade will assess the students' ability to follow the writing process to plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish a story. In phonics we are reviewing adding endings to words. In grammar we are reviewing adverbs and specifically working to begin our sentences with adverbs. M/S/SS This week in math the students will begin a new unit on measurement. They will learn how to describe the inverse relationship between the size of the unit and the number of units needed to equal the length of an object, as well as determine a solution to a problem involving length, including estimating lengths. In science the students are beginning a new unit over natural resources and they will learn about the importance of rocks. In social studies the students are reviewing the information before break concerning our government. HOMEWORK Students are expected complete 20 minutes of Dreambox lessons each night for the month of December. This week in reading the students are digging in deeper with character analysis. We will focus on studying character traits and thinking about how a character's thoughts, actions, and words define them and what kind of person we see them as. In writing the students are completing their first small moment book and beginning a second book about a meaningful small moment. The lessons this week will focus on adding details, description, and showing vs. telling emotions within our pieces. In grammar we are reviewing for our test on Wednesday or Thursday (depending on library lessons). A practice test will be sent home to review. In phonics we are reviewing word endings and will be taking a test on Thursday. The test will be over adding -ed/-ing/-s/-es to various words. M/S/SS This week in math the students will be starting a new unit. In this unit they will be learning how to organize a collection of data with up to four categories using pictographs and bar graphs with intervals of one or more. They will also be able to explain that the length of a bar in a bar graph or the number of pictures in a pictograph represents the number of data points for a given category. They are also reviewing story problems at this time. In science the students are beginning a new unit over movement. This week they will learn about rolling, sliding, and spinning. They will use this knowledge to create a maze as a STEM activity. In social studies the students are reviewing past content. HOMEWORK Students are expected to read aloud 20 minutes, complete 20 minutes of Dreambox lessons, and complete the short ELA activity on their homework every night.
