Weekly Update

This week in reading we are focusing on strengthening reading habits and comprehension. Our lessons will focus on reading partners, holding onto stories even when books are long, and staying on track when our books get tricky. In writing we are continuing with our fiction stories and focusing on writing fairy tales. This week our lessons will cover the writing process, figurative language (idioms, similes, and metaphors), and revision strategies. In grammar we are using a picture talk to review past content as well as introduce dictionary skills. In phonics we will be learning how to use an analogy to spell big words accurately as well as how to use spelling strategies to check and fix up really important words as well as words we use often. M/S/SS This week in math the students are continuing with their unit on measurement. This week they will focus on determining the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar as well as using the cent symbol, dollar sign, and the decimal point to name the value of a collection of coins. In science the students are learning how to observe, describe, and compare rocks by size, texture, and color. They will also focus on being able to identify and compare the properties of natural sources of freshwater and saltwater. In social studies the students are continuing to work with economics and learn about the role of government in society. HOMEWORK Students are required to complete 20 minutes of reading, a daily writing review activity, and 20 minutes of Dreambox. Homework is due on Fridays for a grade.
